RESPONSE TO OIE INSPECTION REPORT 50-269, -270, -287/77-22 ITEM A 10 CFR 20.203(c)(2)(iii) states that high radiation areas be maintained locked except during periods when access to the area is required.
Contrary to the above, access to a high radiation area in Room 119 of the Unit 1 auxiliary building was not controlled as required on September 21, 1977, in that the access door was unlocked and unattended.
This j
is a repeat item of noncompliance.
RESPONSE
1 A modification has been prepared to replace existing wire gates to the high radiation areas with metal doors and frames.
Automatic closures will also be installed to ensure that the doors will close and lock after passage.
It is expected that this modification package will take several months to complete.
In the interim, the health physics section will continue routine surveillance of the radiation control area, veri-fying that high radiation area access doors are closed and locked.
An intrastation letter will be written by November 15, 1977 to station i
personnel reminding them of the requirement to keep all high radiation aeea access doors closed and locked except during passage.
