20545 Re: Oconee Nucle on Docket Nos. 0-269 -270

Dear Mr. Giambusso:

My letter of February 28, 1974 was in response to a verbal request by Mr. I. A. Peltier of your staff for information concerning control rod drive sy'.cem stator failures at Oconee Nuclear Station. We indicated in that - etter that part of the corrective action to prevent stator failures sould be the addition of a nitrogen cover gas system to maintain a vapor-free atmosphere against the stator insulation.

Since then, we have determined that such a cover gas system would have little, if any, effectiveness in preventing the stator failures we have ex-perienced.

Therefore, nitrogen cover gas systems will not be. installed on Oconee Units 1 and 2.

The results of the failure analyses presented in my February 28, 1974 letter are not changed by the deletion of this cover gas system.

Very truly yours,
