Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

South Texas Project Units 1&2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Interim Report on Diesel Generator Fuel Oil Tank Room Exhaust Fans On June 20, 1980, pursuant to 10CF '!50.55(e), Houston Lighting & Power Company notified your office of a potentially reportable deficiency involving the exhaust fans for the diesel generator fuel oil tank rooms. Per comitments given in the STP PSAR and FSAR, these fans must be connected to Class IE power.

However, a routine design review disclosed that the fans are not being supplied from a Class IE source. Because the system design does not meet STP commitments, this deficiency has been detennined to be reportable under 10CFR50.55(e).

Corrective action alternatives are currently being evaluated. Also, this apparent breakdown in design control is being reviewed for generic significance and recurrence control. The next report on this concern will be submitted to your office by September 5,1980.

If there are any questions, please contact Mr. Shawn Rodgers at (713) 676-7953.

Very truly yours, Oh a = )
