Response to IE Bulletin No. 80-08
Dear Sir:
Reference (b) requested we determine if our facility contained flued head designed penetration connections, or other designs with containment boundary butt welds as specified. This letter is to inform you of our affirmative findings (both) and respond to the additional items of Reference (b).
a.
The 1956 Edition of the ASME Code,Section VIII, applied to the fabrication and installation of containment penetration assemblies.
b.
The vapor container specification required (1) complete radiographic inspection of all welded seams, and (2) Magnarlux inspection of the welds of the reinforcing of all openings in the shell. Due to non-existent records, the extent of nondestructiv'e examination cannot be verified.
j c.
Details of the vapor container piping penetrations are provided on the attached drawings.
Pipe size and material type are also denoted on these drawings.
It is unknown whether backing rings were used or not: no mention of backing rings is made on these drawings.
d.
A search of both plant and constructor records has found no records documenting the nondestructive examination of the vapor container penetration assemblies during construction.
