Docket No. 50-364 Mri F. L. Clayton, Jr.

JUN 13 B50 Senior Vice President Alabama Power Company Post Office Box 2641 Birmingham, Alabama 35291

Dear Mr. Clayton:

SUBJECT:

UNDERCLAD CRACKING IN REACTOR VESSEL-N0ZZLES - FARLEY UNIT 2 Recently Sequoyah 1, Watts Bar 2, Salem 2, and North Anna 2 performed augmented ultrasonic inspections of their reactor vessel nozzlc. These examinations were conducted (1) to determine if underclad cracks, resulting from certain pre-and post-clad N'at treatments used by some European fabricators, were present in the ~ 3zzles, and (2) to demonstrate that cladding heat treatments used in the United States did not result in the type of underclad cracks recently found by a European fabricator. The results from the ultrasonic examinations, however, did not indicate an explicit correlation between observed cracking and pre-and post-clad heat treatment.

To better define the potential for cracking in reactor vessel nozzles, we request that you submit the following additional information in regard to the Fa 'ey Unit 2 reactor vessel:

Nozzle base metal material specification type and grade, including material certification data of material used in construction.

Clad process type, electrode size and number of clad layers, includhg material certification data of material used in construction.

Heat input (amps, volts, speed) for each clad layer.

Clad pre-and post-heat temperature and interpass temperature for each clad layer.

Vessel stress relief treatment.

Manufacturer or subcontractor who fabricated vessel and applied nozzle cladding.

We request that you provide this information no later than two weeks after receipt of this letter.
