Dear Mr. Grier:

On February 26, 1980, the NRC resident inspectcr at Callaway Site was informed by Union Electric of deficiencies in electrical penetration assemblies furnished by dunker Ramo Corporation to the Callaway site.

Further investigation indicated these defi~ciencies to be generic in nature and were subsequently reported to Region I on March 24,198f via telecon between McGaughey, NRC and Seiken, SNUPPS.

It was further indicated that this matter would be described in a generic Significant Deficiency Report to be issued by April 30, 1980 by SNUPPS applicable to all SNUPPS units.

A further extension to May 7th was requested of and agreed to by Mr. McGaughey on April 30th.

Enclosed with this letter is a report of the defective penetration assemblies.

This report provides a chronology of events associated l

with discovery of the described deficiencies; summarizes safety impli-cations associated therewith and outlines a plan of follow-up correc-tive actions initiated and/or planned.

This plan will provide for test verification of all questionable or suspect penetration wiring sufficient to assure performance acceptability.
