Docket No. 50-312 Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No.1

Dear Mr. Stello:

Your letter of January 25, 1978 requested a detailed schedule for our evaluation of asymmetric LOCA loads for Rancho Seco Unit No.1.

We have attachad a report entitled "B&W 177 FA Owners Group Asyrrmetric LOCA Loads Evaluation Program." The schedule presented is consistent with your intentions to resolve this issue within two years. As can be determined from the report, we plan to evaluate the asymmetric loads issue in three distinct phases, with the execution of Phases 2 and 3 being depen-dent upon the results of Phase 1.

Only the details of the Phase 1 evaluation have been included in the attached report.

Should we find it necessary to proceed to Phases 2 and 3, we will transmit detailed schedules and implemen-tation plans to you in advance of executing these phases.

Please note that we are engaged in the requested evaluation as a participant of the B&W 177 Fuel Assembly Owners Group and where permissable plan to take advantage of generic analyses.

When doing so, we will provide justification for the generic grouping.

If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact Mr. Robert Dieterich, (916) 452-3211, Extension 603, of my staff who will be coordinating this evaluation for the District.

Sincerely yours, v. hW$&
