RAECHO SECO NUCl. EAR CENER.'> TING STATION A.recent assessment of progress towards the implementation of the Nuclear Plant-Reliability Data System CIPRDS) shows varying degrees of. participation by nuclear powcr plant licensees.

In general, however, it appears that this program ir, of low priority interest to utilities.

].],

Develop:ent of this. data system was initiated in 1969; it is sponsored

?;

by A!!S1 Subcommittee N18-20 and it has been in formal operation since

. July 1974 The AEC.and rore recently the NEC has actively endorsed and supported the development and irplementation of this voluntary fi '

-data reporting syste=.

The data obtained on safety-related corponents and systems fror-the NPRDS should be of carked interest to the entire

' nuclear industry.- Such data could provide a baseline for technological

'ieprovements, it.; proved plant availability, better-founded surveillance test schedules, enhanced maintencoce programs and could be the basis for relaxing sone licensing recuirerents. !!owever, if participation -

-continues at its current uneven rate, it will be trany years before the

. data bank can be ef fectively utilized.

.We prefer that the syster be supported voluntarily by the industry, but-we. willi consider making-participation mandatory -if creater progress i+

is not ecdc. Therefore, if your co pany is not one of the feu that-g

- is1s t ready -a fully participatinc rember of the NPRDS, ce went to urge

"=

.youlto hnve itfbecone one since your full participat ion is needed to

make the NPRDS an ef feetive 'vehic le for data collection.

I: request that you review your cc:epany's participation.to date,: and if'you find insuf ficient ef fort being erpended, suggest that you direct the co citment of personnel or funds to correct that deficiency.

I would appreciate hearing froe you on'this matter and specifically whether and, if. co, when, your cc:npany will beco: c a full participating
