g SACRAMENTO MUNICIPAL UTILITY DISTRICT O 620 suun June 2, 1972 Mr. Lawrence D. Low

. Director Division of Compliance Atomic Energy Commission Washington, D. C.

20545 Atomic Energy. Commission Docket No. 050-312 Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. 1

Dear Mr. Low:

We have been advised by Babcock & Wilcox that a potential problem exists in the control rod drive motor extension tubes for Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No.1.

\\j An inspection of the stock tubes has demonstrated that some,.but not all, of the motor tubes manufactured from Sandvik supplied tubing have exhibited discontinuities on the inside diameter. The Rancho Seco control rod drive motor extension tubes were fabricated from Sandvik supplied tubing.

This possible significant deficiency, as defined in the recent changes to 10CFR50.53 has been reported to your regional office in Berkeley.

A presentation and evaluation of this condition was made to the Atomic Energy Commission on May 11, 1972 and will be documented in a Babcock & Wilcox Topical Report No. EAW-10047 scheduled-to be filed on June 12, 1972.

Babcock & Wilcox has initiated a program to evaluate the problem and perform any corrective action required.

Sincerely yours,

. fut W
