Dear Mr. Reed:
Thank you for informing me of your concerns in regard to the Florida Power Corporation's Crystal River Power Station.
I agree on the need to give this matter special attention.
I also appreciate your offer to provide technical assistance in assess-ing the present situation.
As you know, we have the Crystal River Nuclear Plant (Unit #3) under <:onsideration in our licensing process.
In response to our request, Florida Power Corporation provided a statement of why construction of Unit 3 should not be suspended pending i
completion of a full environmental review.
Based on our assess-ment of the information provided we concluded that continuing construction of the plant would not foreclose alternate means of dissipating the plant's thermal disc ~iarges.
Nevertheless, because of expressed concerns the appli.: ant volunteered to post-pone excavation for the plant intake a.d discharge canals until October 1972 when our environmental impact staterrent is scheduled to be completed.
A copy of our Discussion and Findings document is enclosed for your information.
We hav. 4ust recently begun our environmental review.
As part of tht iew, AEC staff is schedulad to visit the plant site the web,
, March 27.
Your letter was timely in this regard and precipitated an interagency meeting which I am told was very constructive and should prove helpful in our assessment of the situation.
