REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NORTH ANilA POWER STATION, UNIT 2 DOCKET N0; 50-339 BRANCH TECHNICAL POSITION RSB3-1 The following questions are referenced to the North Anna submittal of March 20, 1980 (C. M. Stallings, VEPCO, to H. R. Denton, NRC).
Where discussion involves required operator actions, identify times and feasibility of the action (s).
9.
Question 5 in the referenced submittal included a comparative analysis n
of natural circulation capability between North Anna 2 and Diablo Canyon The analysis as presented does not address upper head effects.
The concern is that inadequate cooling of the upper head may produce thermal stresses with adverse consequences, particularly around the vessel flange.
Show that the Diablo Canyon tests would be applicable to North Anna in addressing this concern.
10.
The response to Question 1 has discussed the air supplies for the safety grade atmospheric dump valves.
Identify any other valves needed to achieve or maintain cold shutdown which require an air supply.
Discuss air supply failures in these valves.
Identify operator actions which would be taken and estim{te tiniel req'uired to perform. _ [

the actions.
Discuss any time or environmental restraints imposed by reactor condition which might dictate action time requirements.
11.
Discuss qualification of the RHR system.
Show that all active components (including necessary instrumentation) in the system are qualified to operate in the worst environment for scenarios identified in the reference submittal (moderate temperature,100% humidity).
For example, the reference submittal and subsequent discussions have suggested that RHR suction isolation vaive motor operators have been qualified for 100% humidity and at least 250 F, an environment which envelopes that for any of the postulated scenarios.

the operator to a loss of flow in the RHR system.
Discuss the i
(Continued) jf scenarios of a~ spurious closure of either RHR suction isolation i
i valve or the RHR flow control valve from event initiation to i
RHR flow restoration.
