SUBJECT:
UNDERCLAD LRACKING IN ItEACTOR VLSSEL N0ZZLES -
i-(Virgil C. Suurer Nuclear Station, Unit No. I l
ic Recently Sequoyah 1, Watts Bar 2, Salem 2, and North Anna 2 performed augraented ultrasonic inspections of their reactor vessel nozzles. These examinations were conducted (1) to determine if underclad cracks, resulting from certain pre-and post-clad heat treatments used by so:re European i
fabricators, were present in the nozzles, and (2) to demonstrate that cladding heat treatments used in the United States did not result in the type of underclad cracks recently found by a European fabricator.
The results from the ultrasonic examinations, however, did not indicate an explicit correlation between observed cracking and pre-and post-clad heat l-treatment.
F l
To better define the potential for cracking in reactor vessel nozzles, we
['
request that you submit the following additional information in regard to the Sunraer, Unit I reactor vessels:
Nozzle base nietal material specification type and grade, including material certification cata of material used in construction.
i-Clad process type, electrode size and nun.ber of clad layers, including n.aterial certification data of material used in construction.
lleat input (amps, volts, speed) for each clad layer.
Clad pre-and post-heat temperature and interrass temperature for each clad layer.
e i-Vessel stress relief treatment.
h Manufacturer or subcontractor who fabricated vessel and applied nozzle cladding.
