JUN 111980 MEMORANDUM FOR: James H. Sniezek, Director Division of Fuel Facilities and Materials Safety Inspection, IE l
l FROM:
G. Wayne Kerr, Assistant Director for State Agreements Program, SP
SUBJECT:
TRITIUM CONTAMINATION 4
Colorado has requested NRC's assistance in evaluating the significance of tritium contamination resulting from the handling of H-3 foils by a Colorado licensee.
Sargent Industries, Sweeney Division, in Denver, is authorized to assemble source mounts containing tritium foils (200 mci maximum) into lightning warning systems, static meters, static monitors, and static balance controls.
The foils are prepared and assembled into the source mounts (supplied by Sweeney) by U. S. Radium Corporation, Morristown, New Jersey. The completed source mounts are shipped to Sweeney for installation into the Sweeney devices.
Colorado inspectors have found removable H-3 contamination in the Sweeney facility (enclosure). Some of the contamination is evidently traceable to the source mounts received from U. S. Radium Corporation (e.g., Wipe No. 4).
To aid in their evaluation of the crntamination findings, Colorado would appreciate information on controls established by U. S. Radium Corporation on removable contamination on source mounts that are prepared, packaged and shipped to Sweeney.
