Docket No. 50-313 Supplementary In formation
Dear Mr. Giambusso:
As requested by your staff during the October 30, 1973, meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, concerning electrical and control systems at Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1, we have prepared the attached report on design versus actual loading on the emergency diesel generators.
This report includes an analysis of the capability of the diesel generators to withstand the addition of the elec-tric motor driven emergency feedwater pump to the engineered safeguards loads.
This letter supplements my letter of November 30, 1973, and Amendment No. 42 to our application.
Very truly yours,
e 4

' Letter Phillips to Giambusso 12/3/73 ANALYSIS FOR EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR LOADING ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE-UNIT 1 The purpose of this analysis is:
1.
To s tudy the loading conditions of the Emergency Diesel Generator under Engineered Safeguards (E.S.) Conditions.
2.
To evaluate the transient frequency and voltage variations of the Diesel Generator which result when an additional load of 700 HP (Emergency Feedwater Pump) is added under an E.S. Condition.
3.
To confirm that the Emergency Diesel Generator does qualify as.an Emergency Power Source and has sufficient margin to satis fy General Design Criterion 17 and Regulatory Guide 1.9.
As the Diesel Generator has different load ratings for different time intervals as shown below, this analysis is based on the Intended Service rating.
DIESEL ENGINE RATING 2600 KW for 8750h = Continuous Rating.
2750 KW for Intended Service.
1 2850 KW fo r 2000h.
2860 KW for 2h out of 24h.
4 2950 KW for 168 h.
3000 KW fo r 4h.
4 3050 KW for 30 min.
GENERATOR RATING 2750 KW, 3437.5 KVA at 0.8 P.F.
Under an E.S. Condition, the Diesel Generators are analyzed for design loads and the actual loads as follows:
The connected load (design HP) under E.S. signal (FSAR Table 8-1) = 2199.75 (1641 KW).
The connected load percentage = 1641x100/2750 = 59.67%.
- The connected load (actual HP) = 1521 KW.
- The connected load percentage = 55%.
- Under tes t conditions actually performed at ANO-1.
q n
/
Adding 'an ' additional load of 700 HP (Emergency Feedwater Pump) when the unit is already loaded to full E.S. loads (1521 KW),
will increase the diesel load to 2043.2 KW, which i s 74 percent of the Intended Service rating load.
Based on calculations performed by the diesel generator vendor (Stewart & Stevenson S e rvi c e, Inc.), the transient voltage and frequency variations under the 4bove conditions are 17.05 percent and 1.5 percent, res pe cti vely.
Prior to connecting the 700 HP load to the diesel, two loads totaling 600 HP can be disconnected (one 350 HP Decay Heat Removal Pump and one 250 HP Reactor Building Spray Pump).
This will reduce the Diesel Generator load to 57 percent of its Intended Service rating.
Under this condition, the transient voltage and frequency variations will be less than the previous case (when the Diesel Generator was loaded to full E.S. load).
Based on the above analysis, it is concluded that the Diesel Generator can feed all the Engineered Safeguard loads and the Emergency Feedwater Pump load of 700 HP and s till maintain a load margin of 26 percent with transient frequency and voltage variations of 1.5 percent and 17.05 percent, res pec ti vely.
These are within the prescribed limits stated in General Design Criterion 17 and Regulatory Guide 1.9 e
