(Propo2cd FSAR changa to ba includ:d in Amendmin No. hl) 11.5 HEALTH PHYSICS The Chemical and Radiation Protection (Health Physics) Department is responsible for orientation and training of personnel in radiation protection principles and procedures to maintain exposures as low as practicable. These procedures are detailed below. The other mechanisms that limit personnel exposures, i.e.,

shielding, location and maintenance provisions for radioactive equipment, radiation zone designations, etc. are discussed in Section 11.3.

11.5.1 PERSONNEL MONITORING SYSTEM Personnel within the Radiation Control Area shall wear persennel monitoring equipment at all times. For official and permanent records, beta-gamma and neutron sensitive film badges or their equivalent (such as thermoluminescent dosimeters,

[TLD's]) are issued to all plant personnel under the supervision of the Chemistry and Radiation Protection Engineer. These monitors are processed monthly or more often for unusual conditions. Special dosimeters, such as ring badges, vrist _

badges, et. , are issued to those personnel for specialized work, for instance, radiochemistry sample preparation, or, if required under the Radiation Work Permit (RWP), to perform special maintenance or operations work in the Radiation Controlled Area.

Pocket ionization chambers and audible personnel radiation monitors are also available on a day-to-day basis for visitors and employees.

Personnel exposure records are kept in the Health Physics office. The exposure for on-site personnel is estimated to be roughly 220 man-rem per year.

Two of three relevant operating PWR facilities contacted responded with figures.

Plant A's estimate was 230 man-rem; Plant B's was 247 man-rem.

To provide assurance that radiation expm ares to personnel in or near the fossil plants are in accordance to 10CFR20 requirements, a network consisting of a minimum of 6 TLD stations are located at various areas of the fossil plant. In addition, continuous air samplers are placed within the fossil plant to monitor particulates and iodine.

TLD's are changed and analyzed on a monthly basis. Air sample filters are changed and analyzed weekly for gross Beta and Iodine.

11.5.2 PERSONNEL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT All personnel entering the Radiation Controlled Area shall wear protective clothing, in accordance with radiation work permit requirements. This clothing includes coveralls, lab coats, caps, shoe covers, gloves, etc.11-19a
