Dear Mr. Engelken:

As defined by Technical Specifications for Rancho Seco Nuclear Generatingd Station,Section6.91,andRegulatoryGuide1.16,ResIsion4,Sec'tionC.2,.6.27 the Sacramento. Municipal Utility District is hereby reporting the following Reportable' Occurrence as R0-76-5 On March 23, 1976, with the plant operating at a steady state power

-f p't level of ' 100. percent, High Pressure injection Pump (P-238A) tripped with no

alarm Indication. The Makeup and Puri fication System was ali gned such that P-238A was supplying normal makeup and RCP seals flow.

High Pressure injec-tion Pump (P-2388) and the Makeup Pump (P-236) were operable and available

- for high pressure injection if necessary. To prevent damage to tFe 'eactor Coolant Pumps from loss of seal supply, the makeup pump was started i mmed i - y*

ately in acc.ordanc~ ".wi tidoperating procedures. This reduced the vibration e

readings in Reactor Coolant Pump A from 18 mils to 13 mils over a period of,'

5 to 10 minutes.. Af ter approximately I hour, vibration levels in RCP-A were reduced to 10 mils.

it was initially felt -that a faulty pressure switch in the Lube Oil 1

System caused the trip, however, subsequent testing could not locate any faulty components that could have. caused the trip; and the occurrence could not be replicated.

It was determined that an unidentifir d spurious signal caused this trip. The system was found to be in proper working order, and -

the pump was returned to service in the high. pressure and is operating = satisfactorily.

iejection,funct. ion.

~

This -trip did not reduce the ef fectiveness of safety systems in any way due to' the availibility of the ot;her two pumps for high pressure 2.

in the event of future occurrences of this type, more extensive testing may be necessary. The pump is a Byron-Jackson, Serial No.

There was no transient associated with this event.
