Directorate of Regulatory Operations Actdtmh.

Q United States Atomic Energy Commission Washington, D. C. 20545 lu

. Dear Dr. Knuth I am directing this letter to you as a result of the Table of Organization for the Directorate of Regulatory Operations which appeared in Vol. 4, No. 9, February 28, 1973 issue of the AEC News Releases.

I trust if you are not the proper authori-ty to contact in matters of this nature, you will forward our request to the pro-

.per persons.

Our organization, whose primary purpose in to assist the members with organic &

biological solutions to farming and gardening problems, has become concerned over the influx of nuclear facilities in South Carolina.

Toward this end, we put to a vote whether or not we should investigate the possible consequences to the citicons cf South Carolina as a result of this industry.

In addition to a show of hands at a mcoting, it was also put to the entire membership thrcugh the newsletter.

'. ' was unanimously in favor of this, so a Nuclear Study Committee was apointed. The vote This

t committee has the responsibility to look into the peccible hazards of nuclear installa-tions and report to the membership.

At present, over 250 persons are members of PC:.

, ' We naturally wish to look at this matter from all sides.

It has not been diffi-cult to obtain material on the con-viewpoint, but we have founi utilities and corpo-rations involved in nuclear endeavors most unwilling to supply information, except the most blatant public relations type material, which is of no use to us.

To cite just two oxamples, when a local utility was asked for the environmental imuact state-ment on one of its nuclear stations, we received instead 50 or so phamplots of the hand-out type.

Officials of Westinghouse Electric Co. assured un they would inferm us when tho environmental impact statement on the proposed Anderson, S. C. Nuclear Fuols Rocycling Plant u.s ccmpleated (it was due in March) and would send us infer-mation on the filtration system to be employed at this facility.

They have done nei-ther.

This roluctance to supply really useful information lends credence to the contention of nuclear opponents that the nuclear industry has much to hide.

We have Icarned of disturbing incidents at the Carolira Power & Light H. B. Rob-inson Nuclear Station at Harts Ville, S. C. and The Duke Power Ccapany Oconce Nuclear Station at Keewee-Toxaway in Oconee Ccunty, S. C.

In view of the above, we request all the Reactor Operating Experiences Reports on the above mentioned nuclear station In addition, we would like (single copics each, of all material requested) a copy of 10 CFR 20 and 10 CFRJ0a proposed Annex to Appendix D.

appreciated, as well as any other material-,you feel may be of assistance to u p

In addition, we would like to knew the AEC's policy of radioactive waste water p.

disposal frem a nuclear station.

Is it stardard policy to dunp such material in a I public body of wator?

We would also appreciate information on ti.e radiological moni-toring program in effect for the Oconee Nuclear Station.

h tion to these matters, I~ remain, Thanking you for your atten-1 8
