I ENCLOSURE I
' MEETING UITH DUKE POWER COMPANY AND BABCOCK & UILCOX ON VESSEL INTERNALS;-
OCONEE 1 & 2 - JANUARY 31, 1973
' Summary B&W made a presentation on the results of the vibration monitoring of vessel internals performed during the recent Oconce 1 preoperational tests.
In this presentation B&W stated that its stress predictions were high (although much lower than design acceptance criteria) beccuse of the conservatism intentionally included in the predictions. The r.ain conservatism according to B&W was in the flow velocities and K resistance factors
' assumed. When these conservative assumptions were climinated from the predictions they became in reasonable agreement with measured values.
The Staff stated that it is confident that the Oconee 1 internals are conservatively designed and that there would be no need to instrument Unit 2 (or any other B&U 177 fuel element plant using these internals) internals. However, B&W must apply predictions to the next type of plant (145 or 205 fuel elements) and instrument the first one as a prototype.
B&W agreed with this and said that the next plant is 3 years away and during this time period B&W would be continuing its efforts to enhance its predictions through understanding.
- B&W will submit:
1.
February 15, 1973 - A letter test report on Oconce 1 vibration test results including the results of the post test inspection.
2.
May 1,- 1973 A topical report (BAW-10039, probably) recapping all the work in this area related to the 177 fuel element plants.
3.
By the end of the year or at least prior to the 145 fuel element plant - a report covering the next prototype plant (145 fuel elements).
e I
g The staf f vill approve the topical report I?AW-10038 " Prototype Vibration Measurcaent Pro;; ram for Recctor Internals - 177 Fuel Assembly Plant " with appropriate qualifications af ter the May 1, 1973 topical report is reviewed.
