ENCLOSURE I SITE VISIT TO OCONEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION TO VIEW VESSEL INTERNALS AND HIGH ENERGY PIPING SYSTEMS - JANUARY 19, 1973 Summary A brief meeting was held with Duke and B&W personnel to discuss the purpose of the visit and the areas of the plant the visitors would like to view. There was a; a discussion of the inspection status and procedures used for the vessel internals and the steam generator.
In general the results of the internals inspection which was completed the day of the visit were favorable. The vimiting staff reviewed the inspection procedures. The steam generator tube inspection was still underway.
Four tubes from each generator were removed because of eddy current and UT indications but only in one group trom one steam generator was any distress discovered and it was local in nature. The noise in the steam generator heard during hot functional tests was isolated to excess material left on the auxiliary feedwater nozzles allowing them to contact a few tubes ( < 20). This situation will be corrected by trimming the nozzle material which was overlooked in the original field installation.
B&W expects that there will be less than 100 tubes to UT and about 20 tubes to be plugged by explosive plugging.
B&W informed the staff that the floodline flow restrictions would be modified with slots to break the continuity of the weld, inhibit crack propogation and allow venting under the sleeve. The slots would also reduce thermal stresses.
It was agreed that a meeting should be held in the near future (a week or two) to go over the ground rules with regard to prototyping a B&W reactor inaccordance with Safety Guide 20.
The remainder of the time was spent in viewing vessel internals, a flow restrictor, the on-line loose parts monitor and the steam and feedwater lines.
