SUBJECT:

MEETING WITH DUKE.N COMPANY Representatives of Duke Power Company met with the Regulatory Staff on January 14, 1966, in Dr. Beck's Office. The following individuals attended:

Duke Power Comoany U.S.A.E.C.

Edward Fiss H. L. Price (part time)

L. C. Dail C. K. Beck R. L. Coan M. M. Mann (part time)

R. S. Boyd J. F. Newell To meet growing power demands in South Carolina, Duke Power Company is evaluating the economics of a nuclear vs. fossil fuel power plant in the 600-750 !!we range to be in operation in 1970 to be followed up by a second plant of identical design to be in operation by 1971. They are considering two sites for such a plant, one on the Savannah River about 8 miles downstream of the Hartwell Reservoir and the other at Keowee about 12 miles north of Clemson, both of which are remote from population.

Assuming that economics m uld dictate construction of nuclear power Mr. Fiss stated that Duke Power Company would request a preliminary site review, possibly on both sites. The reactor plant would be either of pressuri::ed or boiling water design. Duke would plan to submit an application for construction of two reactor plants (similar to Florida) in late 1966 and would desire a construction permit by July 1967 in 1

order to have the first plant completed and on line by 1970.

The contents of a site evaluation report was briefly discussed.

In this 1

regard Mr. Fiss asked if we would look over for suitability of contents a draft copy of a site report Duke had prepared for another site. Mr. Fiss stated that he would call me in about two weeks to obtain my reaction as to whether a site evaluation report covering these contents would be adequate for a preliminary site review.
