APR 1 1980 MEMORANDiM FOR:

Thomas D. Murphy Chief Radiological Asses ment Branch DSE Richard L. Bangart. Acting Chief Effluent Treatment Systens Branch. DSE FROM:

R. Wayne Houston, Chief. DSE

SUBJECT:

LOCAL ESF GRADE FILTRATION SYSTEMS It is evident from the TMI-2 Accident that localized air fiitration systems on the exhaust from roorns that could contain potentially high

+

level radioactive liquids, e.g., RHR and Containment Spray Pump Cells c

and Liquid Waste Tanks could be added to prevent the airborne contamination of the rest of the auxiliary building. This would reduce the exposure l

of the off-site population as well as the control room personnel during

~

an accident involving core damage.

It would further reduce the exposure s

of workers involved in the post acciderth recovery operations.

~

~

It is suggested that the Conmission explore the use of local ESF Grade Filter Systens and revise the appropriate Reg. ' Guides and SRPs.

j These changes, which generally fall. within the area'of the Group III D l

action plan were suggested by Charles Ferrell. Site Analyst. Section B.
