April 8, 1980 Mr. John F. Ahearne, Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555
Dear Mr. Ahearne:
As the Public Health Officer of Lane County, I wish to express my concern for the health and safety of the people of Lane County and the remainder of Oregon. My concern focuses on the proximity of the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant to Mount St. Helens.
I am aware of the significant geographic barriers be-tween Trojan and Mount St. Helens but I am disturbed by the obvious activity of newly reactivated volcano of unknown and uncertain magnitude in close re-lationship to a nuclet.r power plant.
It seems to me that prudent actions would dictate a very conservative approach to Trojan until the activity of Mount St. Helens is exactly and precisely known.
I am not privy to emergency planning, vis-a-vis Trojan and Mount St.
Helens, but I hope that is underway.
If it is at all possible that the health and safety of our people are in jeopardy, then I urge you to see that Trojan is turned off and the fusionable material be removed to a safe location.until Mount St. Helens is clearly quiescent and all danger is past.
[.
E Please let me know what is happening and d at steps are being taken to M
preserve, promote and protect the health of the people.
~
