Subject:
Yankee Nuclear Power Station LOCA Loads
Dear Sir:
This letter is being submitted to inform you of the current status of our program to evaluate LOCA loads at Yankee Nuclear Power Station. References (b) through (d) have previously been submitted in response to this issue.
Pursuant to our discussions last month, we informed you of our program to determine the number and location of pipe restraints and component supports required to allow the plant to safely accept loadings resulting from pipe breaks outside the reactor cavity. That study was to be completed in July, 1980. Also, as a second part of that study, scheduled for completion in November, 1980, we would provide the detailed design and cost estimation for fabrication and installation. Furthermore, we identified that no work on breaks inside the reactor vessel cavity would be initiated until the breaks outside the cavity had been evaluated and the current Westinghouse Owners' Group Mechanistic Pipe Break work had been completed and reviewed by NRC.
However, as a result of the SEP Owners' Group - NRC meeting in Washington on May 14, 1980, which set forth the staff's interim criteria on high energy pipe breaks inside containment, we are terminating our efforts relative to installation of LOCA restraints.
