Honorable James R. Mann United States Congressman Congess of the United States Het.sa of Representatives b Q 1

Washington, D. C. 20515 g}

}D

,b Dear Congressman Mann By ny copies of letters to Serator Follings and Dr. Dorald F. Knuth of the AEC you of aware of sone of my concerns over sene incidents at the Duke Power Ccapany Cconee Nuclear Station at Keewee-Toxaway.

The incident referred to concerning the two workers exposed to radioactive boron was car-ied in the Greenville Piedmont of this date. A copy is enclosed for your convienence.

Six precent of the radiation exposure permitted by the federal codes is 30 millireas, since federal guidelines set 500 millirens as the annual exposure for workers in nue1 ar facilities.

170 millirezs is the limit for the general population.

3 I would like to call your attention to the fact that the EPA has called for a hurdred-fold reduction in these anounts. They base this on "distrubing trerds". in cancer,1cukemia ard infant death rates near nuclear power stations.

Cur infor=ation was correct in this instance, and I have no doubt we will be proved correct in at least 5 other incidents at Oconee.

Of much more importanes and concern to citizens than the above mentioned incident is one in which we have been in-ferned that Duke has been generating so much radioactive waste water (due to the fact that the radicactivity in unit i has gone up, caused possibly by a damaged fuel rod cz' reds, we are told) that they couldn't ship it off-site fast enough.

We were told that sene of thic radioactive waste water was run through the hydro station located

'on site, ani is new in Iake Fartwell.

We have also learned of a spill of some sort of radicactive naterial at this station, and reading the AEC news releases on the problems encounted with this station do not build one's confidence in the safety of CCones.

Coones is in vour Congressieral Dist:ict,, ard 'it is veur constituants that are endangered, as well as your family ard mine.

Having the ut= cst confidence. in your sincere interests for the welfare of the citicens of Congressieral District 4 and South Carolina, I know you will consider that I have not done my duty as a taxpayer ard citizen if I did not brin 6 thess to ycur attention.

I will continue to keep you inforned of any further developments that may cone to ny attention. The Nuclear Study Committee of the Piedmont Organic Moyenent is in the process of gathering data new on these ard other incidents around the state.

Than'c ycu for ycur concern ard interest in these natters.

If I can supply you vit.h any additi. oral, more specific infornation, please advise me.
