Charlotte, N.C.--Duke Power Company said today that the operation of its'first unit at the Oconee Nuclear Station near Clinton, S.C.,

faces further delay.

A company spokesman said that at the completion of the initial water circulation phase of hot functional testing of Oconee Unit 1, and prior to the loading of any e

i fuel, pieces of metal, most of which appear to be from instrument guide pipe, were found in the inlet ends of the two steam generators.

These had dented the tube ends so that they have to be repaired.

This will result in delay of the operation of the unit, but the extent of the delay is not known at this time.

The unit had been scheduled for service in late August.
