Nature of Defect, Substantial Safety Hazard Cr'ented, and Evaluation j
The service water booster pump A motor shorted and tripped the breaker when it was bumped to check rotation. The motor was disassembled, and it was found that the spacer bars between lamination on the rotor were not welded and were misaligned such that the bars were hitting the stator. Copper shavings were also found in the windings. The factory was consulted, and said that the bars should be welded in place. The B pump motor sae also disassembled and the same conditions were observed.
Other Louis Allis motors in the plant were inspected, but they were not of the same construction and did not have this problem. The service water booster pumps supply cooling water for the reactor building cooling units in the event of a safey injection.
A loss of these pumps could result in high temperature and pressure in the reactor building with possible damage to instrumentation and other equipment in the reactor building and containment leakage.
