Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:
Mr. D. L. Ziemann, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #2 Division of Operating Reactors U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:
Subject:
Docket No. 50-206 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letter dated December 20, 1977, we transmitted to the NRC a report prepared by NUS Corporation entitled " Separation and LOCA Environment Assessment of San Onofre Unit 1 Emergency Core Cooling Systems" dated December, 1977. This report identified design modifications in the areas of equipment flooding, both physical and electrical separation and environmental qualification. The recommended modifications were incorporated into the Systematic Evaluation Program (SEP) as indicated in our August 10, 1978 letter.
Subsequently, ar. additional design modification associated with the separation analysis has beet determined. This modification is similar to those identified in Section 5.4.2 of the above report in that more than one power train is present in the set of contacts within a single relay. The relay involved is in the control circuitry of the non-safety related sphere sump pumps. Based on the similarity of this item to the items identified in our report and the potential interaction of this item with potential plant modifications which may be considered in connection with the SEP as discussed in our August 10, 1978 letter, this design modification will be incorporated into the SEP program with the other modifications identified in the NUS report.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please let me know.
