Response to IE Bulletin 79-28

Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

This letter is written in response to IE Bulletin 79-28, Possible Malfunction of NAMCO Model EA180 Limit Switches at Elevated Temperatures. The following items address the licensee actions to be taken as described in the subject bulletin.

Item 1 It has been determined that we have 24 NAMCO EA180 switches installed on cafety-related equipment both inside or outside containment. These switches are used for main steam line isolation valve (MSIV) indication and for Reactor Protection System input for the MSIV closure scram.

Item 2 As this bulletin describes, this problem was first identified at Cooper Nuclear Station.

In September, 1979, all top gaskets of the NAMCO switches were replaced in acccrdance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Item 3 Although our implementation for Items 1 and 2 above have been completed on installed switches, we will again inspect the MSIV switches during our next refueling outage and any corrective action will be taken as required. In the future, if this model of switch is used for any other safety-related function, the guidance of this bulletin and the manufacturer's recommendations will be followed.

Should you have any questions regarding this response, please contact me.

Sincerely, P lant Director of Licensing and Quality Assurance JMP:PJB:mg b
