Dear Mr. Eisenhut:

In response to the request from Robert E. Jackson, Chief Geosciences Branch, the photographs of the GETR foundation excavation were analyzed to see what determinations could be made regarding the geology and geologic structure in the area of the foundation. A total of 13 black and white, 8" x 10" glossy photographs taken by Robert Laws Salon of Photography at the time the GETR foundation was under construction by the Ralph M. Parsons Company. Only 7 of these photographs were taken at a distance z.nd proper angle to reveal the walls of the excavation. These seven photos are designated by letters A through G, for reference in this memorandum. Although these photos were studied previously, in January,1978, when they were first submitted to the NRC, they have been reviewed again as a result of the recent request. The photographs have been analyzed, in some detail, by Richard Harding and Robert Wright of Earth Sciences Associates and Dr. Roy Shlemon. Even though the photographs are of good quality and contrast and some determinations can be made regarding geologic structure from black l and white images, conclusions which can be reached by this method should not I be afforded the same weight as those drawn from actual field examinations of excavations. Nevertheless, the following determinations have been made by our consultants ' from this analysis: l 1. Sedimmts in the foundation excavation consist of nearly horizontal, lenticular interbeds of gravel and clay. Gravel lenses are most prominent in Photo B, extending nearly across the width of the photo and near the base of the excavation wall on the right side of photo G.

GENERAL h ELECTRIC Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut April 29,1980 2. Much of the geologic structure is masked by scars from excavating equipment. Near the base of the excavation wall in the right center of Photo C and the left center of Photo B are several near horizontal sinuous scars. At first glance, t'ese scars, which occur on the northeast side of the excavation, may appear to be shear surfaces. However, if they were thrust fault surfaces, similar to the other shears on the GETR site, one would expect them to project toward the ground surface on the southeast and northwest sides of the excavation. As can be seen in the left edge of Photo B on the southeast side of the excavation, the scars end abruptly in flat lying, unbroken, gravel lenses. On the northwest side of the excavation (left edge Photo D) the scars again end abruptly and are overlain by two flat-lying, unbroken dark soil horizons. Photo A, which was taken while excavating equipment was still working in the excavation, shows the northeast, east, and southeast sides of the excavation before the scars were made by the equipment. Therefore we conclude that these features are man-made and not shear surfaces. 3. No other evidence is seen in the photographs of shear zones or dis-locations of bedding. 4. Near the top of the excavation wall in Photo A, near the center of Photo D, and on the left side of Photo F is a dark clay horizon which appears to be a buried paleosol. This soil horizon exhibits prismatic 1 structure, its upper surface is truncated, and it is overlain by a bleached Albic horizon /stoneline. All of these characteristics typify the Stage 5 paleosol logged in Trer.;h B-1 adjacent to the GETR founda-i tion. If this correlation is correct, then the sediments which underlie the paleosol, and are exposed to a depth of approximately 20 feet in the excavation, must be at least equivalent in age to oxygen isotope Stage 6, about 128,000 to 195,000 years B.P. 5. In the wall of the excavation in the right center of Photo D are two other dark horizons lower in the section than the one described above. i These dark horizons may represent two deeper buried paleosols correlat-J able to the deeper paleosols in Trench H. Although this determination is less certain, these deeper paleosols would represent oxygen-isotope 1 i Stages 7 and 9, extending the age of the sediments on which they developed to about 350,000 years B.P. i Based on the above determinations, the following conclusions can be drawn: The sediments exposed in the GETR foundation excavation can be cor-i o related with the sediments exposed in Trench B-1 immediately adjacent j to the GETR foundation. I
