Dear Mr. Ippolito:

Reference a) provided you with information on our 1977 experience of control rods failing to fully insert. Your letter dated January 10, 1980 requested a report of our experience with additional such events from the time of the last reported occurence through 1979. Accordingly, Table I, provides the number of rods failing to fully insert, the position of the rods, the cause for failure to fully insert, and any related maintenance activities from the period of January 1, 1978 to December 31, 1979. Table II provides a summary of other control rod drive mal-functions for the same ti=e period.

. ,. . 4 l TABLE 2 Pilgrim Station experienced a rod drif t problem with seven control rods during a plant startup. The problem was identified as a crud buildup in the collet fingers and was eliminated through flushing.
