Docket Nos. 50-338 OL and 50-339 OL Service Water Pumphouse Settlement Gentlemen:
On pages 64-66 of your slip opinion (ALAB-578) on the service water pumphouse settlement at North Anna 1 and 2, you expressed your expectation that Vepco would install a device to detect pinhole leaks from the expansion joints.
This let-ter is to inform you that Vepco will install such a device.
7 To design the device a way had to be found to collect any leaking water, because, the expansion joint enclosure has an earthen floor, and so water from small leaks would otherwise seep into the soil.
Also, the water detection system will have to distinguish between water from leaks and rainwater that might drain into the expansion joint enclosure.

March 12, 1980 Page Two Vepco plans to solve these problems by installing a rubber jacket around each set of convolutions on each of the four expansion joints.
Stainless steel tubes will run from the rubber jackets to a common collection vessel, in which a level switch will be mounted.
If water' collects in the vessel it will activate the level switch and turn on an indicator light outside the exp~ansion joint enclosure.
The estimated cost of the system is about $7,500.
