Opersting Reactors, Branch th Division of Operating Reactors United States Nuclear Regulatory Con =ission

  • dashington, D. C. 20000

Dear Mr. Fairtile:

'de certainly hope that your meeting with the anti-nukes, and your co=ments to them, do not reflect a bias on your part.

In no way' do these people speak for the citizens of Maine. A large nu=ber of the sc-called " Sensible" Maine Power zealots are NOT " establishment"; they are antia establishment and live off the system - which is the reason why so many of them could show up on a working day.

I would like to point out that Emil Ostrett is NOT a nuclear engineer and that ex-congressman Stanley Tupper is a solid supporter of Ralph Nader's new Citizens Party and a public power advocate.

I'm sure you are aware of one of the stated goals of Nader's party - an end to all nuclear pover in the U. S.

Then, too, the mission of Nader and Maine SMF group is to destroy the private utility, and the " nuclear safe-ty* howl they raise is merely a smokeccreen for their true aims. Every persen of comnon sense realizes that the real problems of nuclear power are not technolcgieni; they are political.

'4 hen the anti-nuclear people have the unctitigated gall to claim it would be in Maine 's test interest to deny the needed amendments, they do not speak for me, or for thousands of cther Mains pecple.

I'm sure the NRC is cognizant of the fact that Maine Tankee has one of the best operating records in the country. It is part of the life-blood of this state and one of the most vital links in the entire New England Power Pool.

I hope these needed amendnento are not delayed to death, as has been done at Seabrock - for this is the aim of the anti-nukes - to have the plant run out of storage capacity, so it will have to shut down.

Also, I would like to point out that I am not a stockholder er employee of the utility; I am a housewife fed up with the insufferable inertia that allows the dirti-nution of our electrical generating capacity and erosion Of our jobs and quality of life along with it.

'de here that, fcr once, reason will prevail and the utility immediately given j

wh tt it needs to get the jeb dene.

Very truly vours,

Qnu, "hrzw Anne e F. Stevens, President
