L Qeorge 3. Bogardus ao wYNKOOPJ' COURT BETHESDA. MARYLAND 20034 1:

February 9,1980 The Honorable C arles McC. Mathias, h

bnited States Senate, j

Washington, D. C.

Dear Senator Mathias:

r g

Ue urgently need your help.

For a long time we have been stockholders of General Public Utilities Co. (GPU), in Pennsylvania, the parent company of Metropolitan Edison Co.

The latter coapany owns two nuclear power plants at Three Mile Island, near Harrisburg.

~

After the accident in March, 1979, the Nuclear Reg-ulatory Comnission properly suspended its license for Three hile Islan'd II, where the accident occurred.

But it has still failed to give permission to operate the ad'oining Three Zile Island I plant, kbich had been shut down temporarily for routine reasons in March 1979--

and which has been ready to function since last May.

The Commission ignores a host of additional safety pre-cautions instituted since the adcident, and that it is as safe as any nuclear plant in the United States.

The result is that GPU not only has omitted dividends, but is faced with possible bankruptcy by %prril or Kay, with grave hardship to consumers and stockholders.

Won't you express to the IIuclear Regulatory Coamission your deep concern over the harm they are inflicting on consumers and stockholders alike, through their arbitrary even vindictive position?
