November 28, 1979 Honorable Ji=my Carter President of the United States The White House Washington, D.C.
President Carter:
The news media notified the Nation that on November 5, 1979 tha " " ' ~
Regulatory Co= mission decided to stop issuing cons 1ruc31,on p,ermits, and m
operating lacen ds'f w. g qq _pyw g,p.y ts, Do you know that this edict stopped seven nuclear power plants from going into operation? And do you realize that these seven plants could be saving 70 million barrels of oil annually?
g I think you, the Congress and NRC should be doing all possible to find ways I
to reduce the need for fora M nD by-4,qq;;g.asing4e,..vgufagg,lgar -pgy.er, m
plants.~
The Nation's engineering firms, manufadturers and constructors are rtraT)T"~willing and able to rush nuclear power plants into operation.
Please cut out the adverse power-stopping reductions, or appoint a new Nuclear Regulatory Co= mission that can use co==on sense. Better yet, replace the present Nuclear Regulatory Co=missioners - namely Harold R.
Denton, Joseph M. Hendrie, John F. Ahearne, Peter A. Bradford, Victor Gilinsky and Richard T. Kennedy - with the co= mission you established to investigate the Three Mi_c incident. The group you set up were against placing a morotorium on all nuclear power plants; and recommended that each nuclear plant be considered on a plant-by-plant basis.
Mr. President, let's stop pussy footing around, and let us get the nuclear power plants on stream. Let's stop Ralph Nader and Jane Fonda from running NRCl Very truly yours,
& CLAY m.
