400 Chestnut Street Tower II March 25, 1930 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Mr. D. G. Eisenhut, Acting Director Division of Operating Reactors U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Eisenhut:

In the Matter of the Application of

)

Docket No. 50-327 Tennessee Valley Authority

)

In your 1ctter dated February 23, 1980, to All LWR Licensees, TVA was requested to provide information on the low pressure systems which contain a valve configuration consisting of either two check valves in series or two check valves in series with a motor-operated valve to isolate them from the primary coolant pressure. This letter also requested that TVA describe the surveillance or periodic testing which will be accomplished on the referenced valves to ensure their integrity.

This concern was addressed in response to NRC question 6.65 for Sequoyah Nuclear Plant. As stated in the TVA response provided in Sequoyah Final Safety Analysis Report Amendment 62 dated October 31, 1979, series check valves will be periodically tested to ensure each valve's closed position during normal power operation. These check valves isolate the high pressure reactor coolant system piping from lower pressure piping and components associated with the safety injection system, residual heat removal system, and upper head injection system.

It is our understanding that the test procedures as described _in response to question 6.65 have been reviewed by the NRC and found acceptable.

Therefore, no revisions to plant procedures or plant modifications are contemplated.

Very truly yours, i
