Dear Mr. DeYoung:

A design review of the Borated Water Storage Tank, which is the tank used to store refueling water at Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No.1, and other liquid tanks which contain radioactivity at this facility, has been performed. This review has verified that there are no such tanks which overflow to the environs.

The Borated Water Storage Tank was of particular concern in your letter. This tank over#')ws to the Reactor Coolant System Drain Tank. Other tanks which contain radioactive liquid overflow to the Miscellaneous Waste Holdup Tank in the radwaste system.

The operating procedures for the Borated Water Storage i

Tank require daily verification that the level gage on this tank and the level gage in the Control Room are in agreement.

In additiota, the level from the Control Room readout is logged every shif t.

Then are cal high level alarms provided by the annunciator system and the plant computer.

Our review confirms that the existing design and related operating procedures provide adequate assurance that the probability of an overflow of a tank containing radioactive liquids is very low, and should this occur, the plant and local environs will not be contaminated.
