'" t"5 x^trea or ouxS Powca coxe^nv APPLICATION FOR CONSTRUCTION PERMITS OCONEE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1, 2 AND 3 TO THE ATOMIC SAFETY AND LICENSING BOARD:
I am Ernest F. Hollings, United States Senator for the State of South Carolina. I am making this statement with the request that it be incorporated into the record of proceedings of the public hearing in Walhalla, South Carolina on August 29, 1967 on the matter of Duke Power Company's Appli-cation for authority to construct its proposed Oconee Nuclear Station.
I am very much interested in this project and what it foretells for the people of South Carolina. It involves an investment of over three hundred million dollars. This will mean more jobs and industry. It will also mean more tax revenues to support the services that South Carolina needs. It affords a tremendous opportunity for the further developtr,nt at 6 natural resources of Piedmont South Carolina and for recreation and conservation programs.
The area that will be served by the Oconee Station is already one of the fastest growing areas in the southeast. The power to be generated by the Oconee Station is a necessity if orderly growth and development is to co ntinue.
Nuclear generation of electricity has proven ta be safe and efficient.
It does not pollute the air and is aesthetically unebtr.tsive. It can also pro-duce lower power costs.
The development of the nuclear industry has cccurred through a unique partnership between the Atomic Energy Commission and private industry.
The safety record of this industry has been exceptional - perhaps unequalled l

- in the development of any other industry. Every application for authority to construct and operate a nuclear facility is thoroughly reviewed by the regulatory staff of the Atomic Energy Commission and by the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards to assure the health and safety of the public. I have no doubts about the safety of the.Oconee Nuclear Station or Duke Power Company's ability to construgt and operate it. I would hope, therefore, that your deliberations might be expedited so that the benefits of this facility will be available at the earliest possible date.
