M-THRU: Roger S. Boyd, Chief Research &. Rower Reactor Safety Branch, DRL FROM
. Brian Grimes Research & Power Reactor Safety Branch, DRL si:nJECT: REVISIO:IS I ERED SAFETY FEATURES FOR THE DUKE PLMiT DOCKET NOS. 0-24 AND 50-270 On February 2,1967, Bill Lee of Duke Power Company called to discuss the forthcoming meeting on February 14, 1967. He stated that his personnel would be available on February 15 as well, if necessary.
The only additional problem to come up in the staff review is that the Duke containment does not have the capability to be flooded to the level of the core after an accident.
Mr. Lee communicated a number of changes that have been made to the engineered safety features of the plant as a result of our meeting on January 18 in which we stated that the single failure analysis of the engineered safety features should be done after assuming a line break coincidcat with loss of off-site power. The following. changes were described:
(1) Accumulators (" core flooding tanks") w3.11 be proposed.
(2) The low pressure injection pumps will no longer be shared but split:
3 to each unit.
(3) Because of the accumulators, credit for the high pressure injection pumps will not be required for the largest line break.
(4) The containment cooling system will no longer be air j
washers, but tube coolers.
Cooling water will be service water which will meet Class I standards "in this portion of the system."
