Dear Mr. Moseley:

My letter of August 1, 1975 provided a su mary of the resolution of proble=s associated with the process radiation monitors at the Oconet. Nuclear Station.

It was reported that'although good, consistent correlation between the particulate monitors RIA-43 and RIA-47 and laboratory sa=ples has not been possible, the conitors have been shown to be reliable and capable of early detection of changing particulate activity.

The correlation has not been possible due to the presence of high energy, beta-e=itting, short half-lived caterials, such as Rubidium-83, which affect the particulate =onitor but decay before the laboratory analysis can be completed.

Presently, grab samples of the unit vent are only taken to establish the absolute level of activity corresponding to the count rate indicated on the particulate conitors. 'If the indicated count rate changes, new grab samples are taken to establish the new level of activity.

Thus, even though correlation is not possible on a continuous basis, the particulate conitor is operable and provides reliable, qualitative indication of changing particulate activity. -It is considered that the requirements of Technical Specification 3.10.7 are and will continue to be met.

Therefore, it is considered that this item te closed.

Very truly yours, William O. Parker, Jr.
