SOVIET RADIOLOGICAL RELEASE' On Friday,,Ma'rch.13, 1987, I was called by Michael Congdon of..
Ambassador Kennedyts office at State and. informed.that the Swedes and Finns.
were reporting radiological releases emanating from the Soviet Union.
Sarbes Acharya and I subsequently called Lars Hogberg, Deputy Inspector General of the Swedish Nuclear Inspectorate and obtained.the following e

The Swedish Nuclear Inspectorate was told today by Sweden's National Defense

Research Institute ghat radiological readings of 30-50 micro-Biquerels per cubic meter (ABq/m ) of I-131 were being measured in both Sweden and l
. Finland.. Hogberg told me the Defense Research Institute planned a press release and anticipated some statements to be made in the U.S. media.
'Hogberg said 'that, based on the data, they placed the source southeast of the Baltic Sea in the Soviet Union. He also said they estimated the source i
strength at-10 curies.
Finally, he said that +he radiation was only I-131 and was not typical of a source from a reactor core or weapons tests, which would

be expectet to have other isotopes.
