Dear Sir:

In References (c) and (d), we filed intetic 10CFR50.55(e) reportn re-garding a ring setting deficiency f or the main steam saf ety valves. The valves were sent to Wyle Labosatories f or testing f or determination of the proper ring settings. The tests were :ompleted and the results are conteined in Wyle Laboratorico Report No. 47787-01 dated July 12, 1965.

The objectives of the testa vere to:

1. De t ermi ne if the "a s-s hipp ed" ring s et tings of the v alve s woul d allow the requirec disc travel with minimum tailpipe backpressure.
2. De t e rmi ne the ef f ects on the valve disc travel f or a range of backpressures between 180 and 390 psig.

The result s of the "as-s hipped" ring s et ting t es ts indicated that the valves could not ach.teve the required disc travel with 31 steam accunulation a: mi ni me. ;ailpipe pressures of 15-20 psig.

/.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention: Mr. Richard W. Staroste:ki Fage 2 Daring the test, the upper (guide) ring setting was adjusted f rom +155 notches to O and +25 notches, and full required disc travel was achieved at 3% steam accumulation under the f ull range of tailpa pe backpressure tested.

As a result of these test, we have agreed with Crosby, the valve aanu-facturer, that the opticus ring settings for the Seabrook saf n steam saf ety valves shall be -25 not ches for the lover (norrie) ri'ng (original setting) and +25 notchee f or the upper (guide) ring. The corrections were completed by a Crosby service representative et the Wyle f acility prior to returning the velves to the Seabrook Site.

This is our fine) report on this subject.

Very truly your ,
