Ms. Sharon T. Sullivan 625 South Almond Street Fall River, Massachusetts 02724
Dear Ms. Sullivan:
This is in reply to your letter of December 12, 1979, in which you state that authorities " failed to evacuate the people whose lives were in danger" during the Three Mile Island accident.
On March 30, 1979, with the approval of the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Comission, the Governor of Pennsylvania advised that pregnant women and preschool-age children leave the area within a five-mile radius of Three Mile Island until further notice. This advisory was lifted on April 9.
The Report of the President's Comission on Three Mile Islanc states:
"Just how serious was the accident? Based on our investigations of the health effects of the accident, we conclude that in spite of serious damage ; the plant, most of tha radiation was con-tained and the actual release will have a negligible effect on the physical health of individuals. The major health effect of the accident was found to be mental stress."
As a result of the lessons learned at Three Mile Island, actions are being taken to increase the safety of all nuclear power plants and to improve emergency preparedness. Every effort is being made to ensure the protection of the public health and safety.
Sincerely,
[.[HaroldR. Dent A
