(a) License No. DPR-36 (Docket No. 50-309)

(b) USNRC Letter to MYAPC dated October 18, 1979 (c) USNRC Letter to MYAPC dated December 19, 1979

Dear Sir:

Subject:

Endurance Testing of the Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps at Maine Yankee A 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
endurance test has been successfully performed on the Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps, P-25A through C, in accordance with the test requirement specified by the Commission in Reference (b).

The test requirement specified in Reference (b), subsection X.4.3.2, " Additional Short Term Recommendations," was followed in lieu of the revised 48 hour5.555556e-4 days
0.0133 hours
7.936508e-5 weeks
1.8264e-5 months
test requirement specified in Reference (c) since the testing of the pumps was in progress prior to receiving Reference (c).

The following information is a summary of the conditions and results of the endurance tests:

Each of the three auxiliary feedwater pumps was tested separately in accordance with Maine Yankee Special Test Procedure 4-108.

The endurance test on each pump was performed over a continuous 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
time period. At the completion of each endurance test, the pump being tested was returned to its normal safeguards alignment before proceeding to the next pump. The flow path for each pump during its respective endurance test is shown in Figures 1 through 3 In summary, the motor driven pumps, P-25A and C, were eligned to take suction from the demineralized water storage tank and discharge to the main feedwater system upstream of the first point heaters. The turbine driven pump, P-25C, was tested in its rormal safe guards alignment. The reason for not testing the turbine driven pump using the same system alignment as for the motor driven pumps was due to the lower head versus capacity characteristic curve of the turbine driven pump Consequently, the difference between the developed head of the turbine drive pump and the system pressure upstream of the first point feedwater heaters during normal plant operation would be minimal resulting in a negligable pump flow rate.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission February 20, 1980 Attention: Robert W. Reid, Chief Page 2 Following the 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
endurance test, each pump was allowed to cool down and was not restarted and run for one hour.

Since the 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
tests, all three pumps have been run without indication of abnormal operation in accordance with the plant's monthly inservice inspection program for safety class pumps.

In addition, during the current refueling outage which began on January 11, 1980, the two motor driven pumps P-25A and C have been operated for extended time periods without any problems.

During the test, the following parameters were recorded:

a.

Pump Suction Pressure b.

Pump Discharge Pressure c.

Oil Cooler Inlet Water Temperature d.

Bearing Temperatures (Hottest Pump l' earing was Recorded) (1) e.

Motor Current f.

Turbine Steam Inlet Pressure g.

Pump Discharge Flow (2) h.

Pump Bearing Lube Oil Sump Level i.

Motor Inboard Bearing 011 Level J.

Motor Outboard Bearing 011 Level NOTES:

1.

Bearing temperatures were measured locally at the pump and motor using a hand held pyrometer.

2.

Pump curves were used to determine pump flows based on pump total developed head.

Vibration measurements were not taken on the pump cr motor bearing 7 during the tests. However, when measuring the bearing temperatures using the hand held pyrometer, no abnormal vibration (amplitude) was acknowledged by the operator.

In addition, no abnormal levels of vibration were detected during the subsequent monthly inservice inspection program.

Room temperature and humidity were not recorded during the tests.

However, no abnormal increase in temperature or humidity were acknowledged when entering the pump areas to take data.

The 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
endurance tests were performed at reduced flow rates and normal pump RPM. During the 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
endurance test, the flow rate from the motor driven pumps P-25A and C was approximately 125 GPM and approximately 400 GPM from the steam driven feedwater pump, P-25B.

The rated ficw from these pumps is approximately 500 GPM. Bearing temperatures throughout the test remained relatively constant and well within design limits. The data sheets for each pump endurance test are attached as Attachments 1 through 3

4 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission February 20, 1980 Attention:

Robert W. Reid, Chief Page 3 Based on the recorded data and the information given in the description section, we believe that the 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
endurance test performed on each pump adequately demonstrates the capability of these auxiliary feedwater pumps to operate for extended time periods without mechanical difficulty.

We trust this infornation adequately addresses your concerns; however, if you should desire additional information please contact us.

Very truly yours, MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COMPANY bM D.
