Docket No. 50-285 Gentlemen:

This letter is submitted to inform the Commission of the status of two facility modifications for fire protection required by the Commission's Safety Evaluation Report (SER) for the Fort Calhoun Station. Specifically, this letter addresses the District's pro-gress on implementing required modifications in the vicinity of the auxiliary feedvater (AFW) pumps and in the switchgear room.

Sections 31.8 and 5.23 of the SER address modifications to the switchgear room and sections 31.27 and 5 9 address modifica-tions for protection of the AFW pu=ps. The switchgear room modi-fications consist of adding a fire suppression system, installing four manual fire hose stations, rerouting cables, and installing three her fire barriers to provide adequate separation between redundant itchgear. The AFW pump modifications provide for in-sta11ation of a sprinkler system for automatic suppression and three hour fire barriers between the auxiliary feedvater pumps. Pyrocrete was selected by the District for constructing the fire barriers for both the switchgear and the AFW pumps.

The commit =ent date for the AFW pump modifications was December 31, 1979, and for the switchgear room October 31, 1980. The commitment date for implementation of the AFW pump modifications was missed by a few days. Automatic fire suppression capability was installed prior to December 31, 1979; however, the pyrocreting was delayed to the current refueling outage which ecmmenced on January 18, 1980, in order that switchgear room work and AFW vork could be performed at the same time. Since there are no local firms that provide the pyrocreting process, the District experienced difficulties in getting this work dene separately for the AFW pump separation modification.

The schedule for installation of fire barriers in the switchgear (g room was moved up in part to expedite the AFW pump modifications. j b
