P AL ULLM AN CHAIRMAN, COMMITTEE ON WAYS AND MEANS to mm ossacre JOINT COM MITTEE ON T AX ATION Cottgregg of tijt Elititch sbtateg house of Representatibes Elasfjinaton, D.C. 20515 December 20, 1979 John Ahearne Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555

Dear Mr. Chairman:

My purpose in writing is to urge resolution as soon as possible of the issue of whether to resume interim operations at the Trojan nuclear power plant in Oregon.

It is my understanding the Commission will be holding hearings on December 28 and 29, 1979, and that several safety issues will be discussed.

While I would not want to comment on the merits of the case before the Commission, it is impera-tive that an expeditious decision be made.

The Northwest is facing an uncertain energy picture in the months ahead and it is necessary to know whether or not the Trojan facility can be counted on to provide electrical power.

It is expected that substantial energy use curtailments may be required even if Trojan is operating.

Obviously extensive planning will be necessary if the plant is to be out of operation for an extended period of time.

Therefore the earlier a decision is made, the better the Northwest will be able to plan for its energy needs.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sin.relv, I
