JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATIONS JANUARY, 1979 In January, 1979, there were four unit shutdowns (all automatically initiated) and three power reductions. The unit tripped January 16 when inverter 1B tripped. An investi-gation revealed a grounded choke coil which caused the DC input fuse to blow. The choke coil and fuse were replaced and a unit startup was initiated January 17. Before the generator was tied to the grid on January 17, the unit tripped on S/G LO-LO level. The unit was returned to power on January 17.

The unit tripped January 18 due to RCP Bus Undervoltage.

An STP was being performed by the electricians when a fuse for the UV relay under test blew. When the fuse block was pulled to replace the blown fuse, both UV relays for one RCS loop were de-energized causing the unit trip. The unit was returned to power on January 18. While starting up the unit, delta-flux exceeded its band which resulted in more than 60 penalty points. The unit had to be limited to 300 MWe until January 19 when the unit was returned to 100%

power.

The unit tripped January 20 following a turbine trip due to loss af condenser vacuum (both circulating water pumps tripped during a rain storm). An investigation verified operability of 1A circulating water pump and the grounding of all 3 phases of 1B circulating water pump motor. Caus.e of the motor failure is unknown. The unit was returned to power January 21. After starting the unit up, unit power was limited to 600 MWe by condenser vacuum while a Unit 2 circulating water pump motor was being exchanged for 1B circulating water pump motor. Condenser vacuum allowed the unit power to be increased to 660 MWe on January 25. The unit was returned to 100% power on January 31.

The following significant safety-related maintenance was performed in January:

1. Replaced S/G blowdown pump 1A.
2. Replaced choke coil on 1B inverter.

3. Replaced 1B circulating water pump motor
4. Overhauled 1A&lc service air compressors
5. Repaired RPM indicator on 1-2A Emergency Diesel
6. Replaced bearings on Boric Acid Batching Tank Agitator Motor
7. Rocker arm inspection on 1-2A, 1B und 2B Diesel Engines
8. Replaced mechanical seal on lA BIT recirculating pump
9. Overhauled A train river water air compressor
10. Replaced B vacuum pump and an acid pump at the WTP
11. Doble tested various 550 KV and 230KV breakers
