Mr. James P. O'Reilly Centlemen:
The following information is submitted in response to your letter of November 20, 1979, which transmitted I&E Bulletin 79-26, " Boron Loss from BWR Control Blades". The response provided is for Item 3 of the Bulletin as outlined in Item 5 of the Bulletin. Our letter of January 4, 1980, provided responses to Items 1 and 2 of the Bulletin.
RESPONSE
3.a On January 19, 1980 and January 28, 1980, Georgia Power Company performed control blade suberiticality tests on Hatch-1 and Hatch-2, respectively, while in cold xenon-free conditions.
The results of these tests indicate that full withdrawal of any control blade did not result in criticality for either unit.
3.b As a result of the most recent examination of control blade exposures, it has been determined that no control blade segment in either Hatch-1 or Hatch-2 currently exceeds 25 percent B10 average depletion (50 percent B10 local depletion).
Since the observations to date show that boron loss does not occur until 50 percent B10 local depletion, there is no impact by this phenomena on com-pliance with the shutdown margin requirement for either unit at this time.
If you have any questions or comments in this regard, please contact my office.
Very truly yours, L O <. $ ; a.-
