JUL 1819B NOTE T0:

J. Angelo
SUBJECT:
STATUS OF TASK A-17 1.
Fault Trees for the Safety Function " Reactor Coolant Pressure Boundary (RCPB)"
Most of these fault trees (Fig. 5.3 series) were completed and received at NRC on July 16. The balance will be completed within a few days.
Copies are now being made for distribution to the members of the task review group.
Attached is a letter from J. Hickman explaining the status of the Fig. 5.3 saries of fault trees.
2.
Visit to Watts Bar A visit is scheduled for July 25 to survey specific plant components that appear in the cut sets on the RCPB safety function. One person from Sandia (G. Boyd) and I will visit Watts Bar to develop the necessary infonnation which will be used to reduce the cut sets for interactive characteristics.
3.
Meeting with Sandia Labs A meeting is scheduled for August 8 and 9 at Sandia Labs to discuss our review of the RCPB fault trees.
A team consisting of J. Zwolinski, T. Scarbrough, and I will convey all of the review group comments to Sandia and make a disposition of the comments.
4.
Future Meeting with Sandia to Review the Fault Tree Analysis The most likely time for such a meeting appears now to be the time between August 27 to September 7.
By that time Sandia will have completed the analysis of RCPB fault trees and will be nearly completed with the fault trees for the decay heat removal safety function. You should make your tentative plans around those dates for your visit to Sandia.
5.
Schedule It appears that the schedule given to us by Sandia at a meeting on June 12
. as optimistic. Sandia is running about two,to three weeks late on the w
,RCPB fault trees and expected to catch up on the other series of fault 1734 102 8001110WO

trees.
I suspect that there will be no catchup, but in fact there may be further delays. However, most of these delays seem unavoidable and due mostly to unexpected difficulties in structuring the fault trees.
