Mr. T. A. Ippolito, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 United States Nuclear Regulatory Cocsission Washington, D. C.

20555 BRJNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-325 LICENSE NO. DPR-71 CONTAINMENT WATER LEVEL MONITORING

Dear Mr. Ippolito:

In our letter of October 10, 1980, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) discussed our schedule regarding containment water level monitoring capability relative to the then proposed NRC commitment date of January 1, 1981 for this modification. Based en our review of NUREG-0737 (which was transmitted by Mr. D. G. Eisenhut's letter of October 31, 1980), and our re-evaluation of outage schedules and work completed to date, this letter revises and supersedes information provided in our October 10, 1980 letter.

Because of the requirement that the torus area be drained to accomplish this work, CP&L had determined that the proper time to complete this modification would be during the outage for each unit that included the Mark I torus modifications, owing to ALARA and other operational /

scheduling considerations. For Brunswick Unit 1, the Mark I modifi-cations will be cade during the upcoming refueling outage, which is currently set to begin in March, 1982. This represents an extension of several months beyond the new NRC schedule of January 1, 1982 set forth DOY

in NUREG-0737. This schedule will be delineated in our response to Mr. Eisenhut's letter of October 31, 1980. The portion of the containment water level modification that requires access to the torus was completed on Unit 2 during the recent refueling outage, as part of our objective to complete the modification on Unit 2 by the then proposed NRC schedule of January 1, 1981.

It is now our intent to complete the remainder of this work on Unit 2 by January 1, 1982, in accordance with NRC's revised schedule for this item.

If you have any questions on this subject, please contact my staff.

Yours very truly,

~,. -
