Subject:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit Nos. 1 & 2, Docket Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 Follow-up Actions Resulting from TMI-2 Incident (Lessons Learned)

Gentlemen:

Our letter of 2/29/80 contained responses to questions raised during your staff's visit to Calvert Cliffs on 2/19/80.

Following are clarifications to several of our answers, as requested by your staff:

2.1.h Containment Isolation Comment concerning nain steam line isolation: The small bypass valves used for varming downstream piping and caualizing pressure across the Main Steam Isolation Valve do not close on low steam generator nressure, contrary to our 2/29 response.

In design and testing, the steam renerator is considered to be the containment boundary.

2.1.8b Effluent Monitors Comment concerning interim noble cas monitoring:

In the event that the Main Vent Noble Gas Monitor goes off scale, a portable dose rate meter, PIC 6A, vill be used to estimate the off-site release.

This instrument vill be calibrated for this purpose by exposing it to known noble gas mixtures and obtaining a conversion factor to convert mR/hr to jiCi/cc. Once this conversion factor has been obtained, calibration of the instrument vill consist of semi-annual electronic calibration. These readings vill be conducted on a small section of pipe of the RMS system where no other appreciable radioactive interferences vill be present.

Mr. R. 'J. Beid March 12, 1980 This information vill be relayed to the Control Room and Technical Support Center via the page system. Additional batteries vill be naintained in the Control Poom Fr.ergency Kit for this instrunent.

Calibration and calculation information, reading locations and exnosure protection procedures, and procedures for renorting infomation vill be detailed in RCP-1-503, scheduled to be complete by 3/31/80.

Very truly yours.,
